Plaquenil Use in Autoimmune Diseases by Dermatologists and Rheumatologists Dr. Camisa February 9, 2014 February 9, 2014 Autoimmune diseases / Lupus / Psoriasis / Treatments It may surprise you to learn that anti-malarial drugs are used by dermatologists and rheumatologists. Plaquenil does not work for everyonebut thankfully it does for me. Without Plaquenil, I am sleeping most of the day and unable to accomplish much. Plaquenil also takes time to build up in your body to determine whether it works for one person and not another. For me, it was about 6-months. I believe Drs generally state 3-6 months for patients. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil, a drug designed to treat malaria, is often helpful in treating Sjogren's syndrome. Drugs that suppress the immune system, such as methotrexate Trexall, also might be prescribed.

Today, it is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, some symptoms of lupus, childhood arthritis (or juvenile idiopathic arthritis) and other autoimmune diseases. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria.

  5. I completely agree with Lynnwood that plaquenil helps stop the progression of your disease, so the longer you wait the worse your Sjogren's becomes. Plaquenil is a fairly benign medication and was originally developed to protect against malaria. Later it was found to help autoimmune diseases. It can be months before you get relief with plaquenil.

Hi - I just started Plaquenil 400 mg a day two week ago and I started feeling less achy and tired a few days ago. Is it possible for it to work quicker in some people? I've heard it can take months, but I must say that I haven't felt like this since I was a kid - not achy or stiff. Has anyone had a similar I met a lady yesterday where I work with sjogren's, first time I have met someone face to face. It was actually pretty discouraging. She showed me how dry her arms were and told me how she can't even go out and do things longer than a few hours. She finish with how she had been on Prednisone and Plaquenil and she was miserable. Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine "I’ve been on plaquenil 400mg once a day for 6 months now due to Sjogrens. If your are wondering how long the plaquenil takes to work, it took about 3 months before I starting feeling better. Now at 6 months I’m noticing more symptoms. I have a rash on my arms and my face feels like it’s burning but I don.

Methotrexate may be considered for the treatment of psoriasis or rheumatoid arthritis if other treatments have failed. Side effects can be severe and potentially fatal so a full assessment of the risks versus benefits is required before methotrexate is prescribed. Plaquenil and Pregnancy rheumatoid I was on plaquenil and remicade before getting pregnant but stopped remicade a few months ago and I’m currently waiting to start Cimzia which is safer for pregnancy and breastfeeding. My symptoms are currently very mild and baby is doing fine. My first pregnancy I took nothing but a very low dose of prednisone and baby was perfectly healthy.

Has anyone taken Plaquenil. — The Bump

Where and How Chloroquine Fights Cancer Science Signaling Aug 19, 2014 Chloroquine is an antimalaria drug that also suppresses tumor growth and metastasis. Chloroquine neutralizes the pH of intracellular compartments, thereby disrupting the endosomal trafficking and lysosomal function. Whereas chloroquine impairs autophagy and proliferation in tumor cells, Maes et al. found that chloroquine suppressed the growth and metastasis of melanoma by acting on tumor.
