  1. Stopping plaquenil before pregnancy

So far I have no more energy than when I first started and has developed neuropathy which I have just found out from Web MD that this neuropathy is one of the side effects of this med! Saying that by stopping this it would take another 6 months to build up the benefit. There are other meds that can help with what you are experiencing, and if your doctor didn't address that then I would seek out a second opinion... Please don't stop your plaquenil until you are sure it is the right thing to do and in your best interest.

May 13, 2009 The OR of pre-mature birth defined as birth before 37 weeks in women taking HCQ during pregnancy was 1.10 95% CI 0.75, 1.61. Conclusion HCQ is not associated with any increased risk of congenital defects, spontaneous abortions, fetal death, pre-maturity and decreased numbers of live births in patients with auto-immune diseases. Plaquenil is the brand name for the prescription drug hydroxychloroquine. It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and others. No fetal abnormalities are known to have occurred from taking hydroxychloroquine, and physicians at several major universities have used anti-malarial drugs for years to treat pregnant women with lupus without negative side effects on the fetus.

Plaquenil is a 6-weeker as far as the benefits are concerned, but it would be more dangerous to stop if you spend a lot of time outside and if this were the summer. Or maybe another doctor if you're not comfortable w/your current one.

  4. I recently decided to stop taking Plaquenil because I was having constant chest pains even more so than I usually have due to Lupus. Since I have not taken it my chest feels so much better which is odd because chest pain is not listed as a side effect. Also I noticed that the Plaquenil I think was making me feel different but not in a good way.

In animal studies on Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine and pregnancy, the medication crossed the placenta and accumulated in the eyes of the fetus when it was given to pregnant animals. Although human studies are lacking, available evidence suggests a relatively low risk to the fetus. The simple answer is to stop all unnecessary medications before attempting pregnancy, but of course, that's not always possible. Some that you should definitely avoid because they can harm the fetus include isotretinoin, better known as Accutane for acne. Hydroxychloroquine Pregnancy Warnings Animal studies have revealed evidence of fetal harm. Use of chloroquine and other 4-aminoquinolines in high doses and for prolonged durations has been associated with neurological disturbances and interference with hearing, balance, and vision in the fetus.
