One such commonly used medication for dermatologic and rheumatologic inflammatory conditions is hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil), a chloroquine derivative. It is used to treat many diseases including malaria, rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus.

AAO Screening Guidelines for Plaquenil. by S P. Check out my recent review/summary of the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s statement on the Recommendations on Screening for Chloroquine and Hydroxychloroquine Retinopathy 2016 Revision from the Ophthalmology Journal 2016;186-1394. Just this year alone, at least 20 colleagues have asked me to help clarify one or more ambiguities associated with the American Academy of Ophthalmology's 2011 Plaquenil guidelines. Without question, I believe several aspects of the new recommendations may be confusing. Jan 05, 2020 Hydroxychloroquine is a well-tolerated medication for various rheumatologic and dermatologic conditions. Its main side effects are gastrointestinal upset, skin rash, headache, and ocular toxicity1. Within the eye, hydroxychloroquine can adversely impact the cornea, ciliary body, and retina1

It is imperative that patients and physicians are aware of and watch for this drug’s ocular side effects. Retinal toxicity from hydroxychloroquine is rare, but even if the medication is discontinued, vision loss may be irreversible and may continue to progress.

Plaquenil and your eyes. A rare side effect of Plaquenil is damage to the eye's retina. The retina is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Using Plaquenil for a long period of time may harm the retina, causing serious vision loss. People with retinal damage from Plaquenil are not aware at first that they are losing vision. May 16, 2011 Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil; HCQ has been an important and effective drug for the treatment of lupus erythematosus and related autoimmune and inflammatory diseases for half a century, although its potential to cause retinal damage continues to raise concern among rheumatologists and ophthalmologists. Background/Purpose Hydroxychloroquine HCQ is a widely-used medication in many rheumatologic conditions. The most worrisome toxicity is irreversible damage to retinal pigment epithelium which can lead to blindness. The most recent 2016 guidelines from the American Academy of Ophthalmology AAO recommend the dose of HCQ ≤5 mg/kg real body weight to minimize toxicity1. According to these

Best time to take Plaquenil? rheumatoid I have found that for me i can't take my Plaquenil before bed as it makes me anxious and makes it difficult to sleep. I work overnights, so I take it before i go to work, then by the time I get home I am able to sleep ok. I always take it with food though, as it makes me nauseous otherwise.

Anxiety and Plaquenil Has anyone experienced mood. - LUPUS UK I really don’t think the Plaquenil causes anxiety. I think that there are other factors that we deal with related to our illnesses that create anxiety. For example, we over think the illness and ruminate the situation we are in. This leads to other areas of our life suffering.
